ABOUT IRELAND
About Ireland
The island of Ireland is the western most country in Europe. It is flanked to the east by Britain and the continent of Europe, and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean. The capital city is Dublin to the East, and the other major centres of population are Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford. The population of Ireland is 4.2 million inhabitants, around sixty per cent of whom live in cities and towns, and a high proportion are concentrated in the younger age groups. Although Irish (Gaelic) is the official language of the state, English is in fact the first language for the majority of the population and is universally spoken.

Ireland is recognised worldwide for its high standard of education as well its unique culture which has produced many famous writers, artists and musicians. In recent decades, Ireland's advancements in technology and infrastructure, in combination with its educated workforce and strategic location as the western gateway to Europe have led to significant inward investment and the creation of its "smart economy".

In centuries past, Ireland was settled by Celts, Vikings, Normans, English and latterly by modern-day immigrants from Europe and Asia. Each new group of immigrants has contributed to Ireland's vibrant culture and diverse heritage.

Ireland is also justly famous for the beauty of its natural landscape and its warm welcome to visitors, and tourism is therefore another major contributor to its economy.
