Arts and Culture

The Puck Fair in Killorglin, County Kerry is one of Ireland's oldest festivals and has been going since around 1610. One of the more unusual aspects of the festival involves the crowning of a goat King Puck. Yes, a goat. But if that's all too strange for you, you can always enjoy the more straightforward festival events like open- air concerts, fireworks, street entertainment and children's competitions.

Arts and Culture
Irish music, dance, storytelling, literature, art and architecture - in all their traditional and modern forms - are integral to the development a unique and vibrant cultural identity which is in itself a reason that many people visit Ireland. There are many ways to experience contemporary Irish culture - by going to a spectacular show like Riverdance, by attending one of the many literary and music festivals around the country, or by simply visiting your local pub for a glass of Guinness and a traditional music "session". Irish culture is very accessible and inclusive, and is probably best embodied in the humour and storytelling of its people - which you can enjoy for free!

The cultural and creative sectors in Ireland have achieved much in recent years. Two of our Museums have won European Museum of the Year awards. The National Library wins prizes internationally for its exhibitions. Irish- made films won 20 prestigious prizes internationally in 2009 alone. Irish writers are deserved winners of many prizes at major international literature competitions.
