Birr Castle in Co. Offaly is home to Brendan Parsons, the Seventh Earl of Rosse, whose family and the Castle itself have fascinating histories that include extensive, long-established links with China. Among the treasures of Birr Castle are the famous Giant Telescope, a Historic, Science and Photographic Centre, a magnificent botanic collection of rare and exotic plants from all over the world including the Hunan province woodland.

Sporting Links
The 2008 Beijing Olympics is one of China's great achievements on the world stage, and its sporting and architectural wonders reached out to Irish people and generated a huge amount of interest about China.

Green Dragon was the Chinese/Irish entry in the 2009 Volvo Round-the-World Ocean Race. Upon her arrival in Galway harbour on the west coast of Ireland she was greeted by thousands of Irish supporters, a fireworks display and 500 Chinese drummers. It was a heroes' welcome for an heroic Chinese-Irish venture and testament to the ever closer ties between China and Ireland.
