Visual Arts

The Visual Arts
The visual arts in Ireland present a hugely diverse range of talented artists, sculptors and craftspeople. During the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, a strong indigenous tradition of painting emerged, including such figures as John Butler Yeats, William Orpen and Jack B Yeats (brother of WB Yeats).

Some of Ireland's best known living artists include Louis le Brocquy, a figurative painter and print maker, Seán Scully an abstract expressionist who lives and works in New York, Patrick Scott, the venerable abstract artist who is best known for his geometric "gold paintings", Robert Ballagh, whose hyper-real style is strongly influenced by pop art, Dorothy Cross, the sculptor and filmmaker and James Coleman, the installation and video artist.

Interest in collecting Irish art has expanded rapidly both within Ireland and internationally - primarily focusing on investment in early twentieth century painters as well as the contemporary artists mentioned above.

Famous galleries include the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin which hosts the national collection, IMMA (the Irish Museum of Modern Art) and the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin Castle, which houses a permanent display of art and manuscripts from countries across Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and Europe.

The "Artist in Youth Work Scheme" offered by the Youth Arts Programme aims to extend and enhance opportunities for young people to experience and participate in the arts. The goal of the scheme is to encourage artistic collaboration between professional artists and young people. Young people will have the opportunity to work with and learn from artists, and, equally, artists will have the opportunity to enrich their own professional practice through the experience of working with young people.

During the Shanghai Expo, the Ireland Pavilion will host "An Éire of the Senses", an exhibition organised by the 411 Galleries. The exhibition includes painting, drawing, video art, sculpture, photography and printmaking from 21 of Ireland's leading contemporary artists.
